About me

I hated PE at school. Any kind of physical activity at school usually meant being cold, wet or, if like me you were pretty useless at anything vaguely physical, humiliation and defeat. Add into that the disgusting maroon polyester gym skirts and tent sized knickers we were forced to wear and you have a recipe for lifelong PTSD, flashbacks and avoidance of exercise.

So how did I end up in the fitness industry with this traumatic exercise background? The honest answer is that I kind of fell into it. At the start of my 30s I’d predominantly worked in sales and hated all the stress and competitiveness that is prevalent in that environment. I decided I wanted out and as I was getting old (30 seems ancient when you are 30) I knew I probably needed to retrain for another career.

I didn’t want be stuck in another office, so on the back of taking part in aerobics classes on a regular basis I decided to become an aerobics instructor. This then lead to me going to university as a mature student at the grand old age of 32 to do a Sports Science degree and my new career in exercise.

Over the last 20 odd years I have worked in a number of positions in the fitness industry; aerobics instructor, run a gym in a secure mental health unit, personal trainer, chair based exercise instructor and sports massage therapist, so have a good few years experience in various positions. I’ve also done a ton of CPD and qualifications and have been (and still am) a member of various governing bodies and professional registers. In other words, I’m old, and have quite a bit of experience of stuff related to the fitness industry.
